A Brief History

The first “Blue Plaque” or memorial tablet to give them their correct name was erected in London in 1867 and was for the poet Lord Byron.
The scheme was originally run by The Royal Society of Arts, It was later passed to London County Council and then in 1986 English Heritage took over. In London there are around 800.

The Manchester scheme is different. It was run by The City Council. There are Four colours. Blue for people, Red for events, Black for buildings of interest and recently introduced, Green for miscellaneous.

The responsibility for researching the facts, the accuracy of the site and funding is now up to the individual or group that requests the plaque. It is not now known how many there are, or where they all are.

I'm still finding them.............
